Ask AdaMarie: Do you have any tips on how to network?

“Hi AdaMarie!  I went to university outside of the US, but I am applying to US jobs. However, all my friends who have jobs in the US got them through internships while at university through US university job fairs. Obviously, I couldn't do that. Do you have any tips on how to network, even though my network is primarily thousands of miles away?”

You're absolutely correct that a lot of students in the U.S. get jobs through internships and career fairs, but that’s definitely not the only way in. There are still plenty of ways to get your foot in the door—even without that built-in network, though it might take a little bit of extra leg-work!

Professional networking platforms are extremely helpful to find new connections - especially if you’re interested in working in a specific field. When you find a company you’re interested in, send a short, friendly message to their hiring manager, recruiter, or someone that works in the department you’d apply for. You want to be specific about what you’re looking for because a clear and targeted message increases the chances of getting a helpful response and shows that you’ve done your research.

Here’s an example of a potential message you can send:

“Hello {Name},
I hope you’re doing well! I’m really interested in learning more about careers at {Company} and wanted to reach out. As someone who studied abroad, I’m navigating networking in the U.S. and would love any advice you might have on breaking into the industry.

If you’re open to a quick chat, I’d truly appreciate your insights. Thanks so much for your time!”

When reaching out, don’t be afraid to show a bit of personality! A friendly, genuine message - maybe referencing a shared interest, a fun fact about the company, or a unique reason you’re reaching out - can make it memorable. Just keep it professional and respectful of their time, so it feels like a natural connection rather than a cold pitch.

🔥 PRO TIP: Consider adding a section at the bottom of your resume or online professional profiles for special interests - you never know who might share them!

—------------------------------------

Virtual networking events, industry conferences, and professional groups are great opportunities to meet and connect with people in your field. Recruiters and hiring managers often attend these events specifically to find new talent, so it’s important to introduce yourself and make a memorable impression. Be sure to come prepared with a brief pitch about who you are and what you’re looking for, and don’t hesitate to ask insightful questions about the company or industry. A little research before the event can help you tailor your conversation and stand out in a crowded virtual space.

It’s a bit like speed dating. How can we have the most memorable and meaningful conversation in the shortest amount of time possible?

🔥 PRO TIP: If there is a company you’re extremely interested in speaking with, don’t talk to them first!  Calm your nerves and test out your pitch with companies that aren’t your absolute dream job.  You’ll gain practice and confidence, and you never know where those trial conversations will lead either!

—------------------------------------

Smaller, niche job boards can also be a great resource because they cater to specific industries or skill sets, making it easier for employers to find highly targeted talent. Unlike larger, general job boards, these platforms help employers connect directly with candidates who meet their exact needs, reducing the time spent sifting through unrelated resumes. To maximize your chances, be sure to regularly search for jobs on these sites and tailor your resume to match the specific skills and experiences employers are looking for. And if the site allows, upload your resume to their database - this increases your visibility and makes it easier for recruiters to reach out directly with relevant opportunities.
