Navigating Visibility Without Burnout with Dr. Carmen Banks

There is a version of career advice that sounds something like this: build your brand, speak up more, post consistently, network intentionally, be visible. And visibility can absolutely open doors. But for many professionals, especially those who have spent careers navigating spaces not fully built for them, there is another side to that conversation that rarely gets airtime.

Visibility can also be exhausting.

That tension was the starting point for one of our most honest fireside conversations to date. We sat down with Dr. Carmen Banks, cell and molecular biologist and founder of MelanInScience, to talk about what it looks like to pursue visibility in a way that supports your long-term growth rather than quietly depleting it.

What followed was the kind of conversation we do not hear often enough in professional spaces, one that acknowledged that showing up, being seen, and remaining engaged can carry a weight that goes largely unspoken. That weight looks different for different people, but many professionals will recognize it immediately. It lives in the pressure to always be available, always be composed, always say yes to the next opportunity because you are afraid of what happens if you do not.

Dr. Banks brought both personal and professional insight to the conversation, and what emerged was a reframe that we think a lot of people needed to hear. Not a rejection of visibility but a more honest, more sustainable way of thinking about it.

The conversation also got into the practical side of things: how to make intentional decisions about where your energy goes, how to navigate digital spaces without losing yourself in them, and how to build a career presence that actually reflects your values rather than just your output.

Because burnout is not proof of ambition. And exhaustion should not be the price of being taken seriously.

If you have ever felt the pull between wanting to grow and needing to protect yourself in the process, this one is for you.
