AdaMarie Industry Highlight: Construction

Why We Need to Recognize Construction as a Vital Part of STEM—and How AdaMarie Supports Women in the Industry

When people think of STEM careers, they often envision fields like engineering, computer science, or biotech. But one key industry is often overlooked: construction. What many don't realize is that construction plays a crucial role in STEM, with a significant number of jobs in the sector qualifying as STEM occupations. According to recent data, approximately 11% of construction roles are held by women, but a much smaller fraction—around 4%—work directly in trades and field leadership positions. This gap shows a clear need for targeted support for women in construction.

Additionally, the construction industry is facing a talent shortage, with an estimated need for around 590,000 new workers to keep up with demand. It's a perfect opportunity to bring more women into these critical roles, particularly since construction leadership offers a direct path to innovation and industry-wide problem-solving.

Majors Leading to Careers in Construction

Many academic pathways can lead to a career in construction, including degrees in:

  • Civil Engineering

  • Construction Management

  • Architecture

  • Environmental Engineering

  • Mechanical Engineering

  • Urban Planning

These fields don’t just contribute to construction—they drive it. From managing large-scale infrastructure projects to designing sustainable buildings, the skills learned in these disciplines are directly applicable to STEM-related construction roles.

Specialized Support for Women in Construction

At AdaMarie, we recognize that women in construction face unique challenges. Our community is built to provide the support these women need, whether they are just starting their careers or have already moved into leadership positions. We see these women as individuals with specific needs and ambitions, and understand the additional burden of not only steering their own careers, but finding a way to be themselves and shine in a male-dominated industry.

Women in construction leadership have an especially critical role to play in mentoring and lifting up the next generation by offering guidance, sharing experiences, and providing practical - and real - advice. That said, it's an all too common and unfair burden to put on the shoulders of women in leadership in made-dominated spaces. For women already holding up such a heavy mantle, adding the weight of retaining junior women is sometimes too much to ask. Our advice - look for thoughtful, credible, data-driven support.

AdaMarie’s Programs: Helping Women Thrive in STEM and Construction

Through our Talent Development Program, we help women in construction (and all STEM fields) build the skills they need to excel. Whether it's advancing in their current role or stepping into leadership, our program provides the structure and resources women need to move forward with confidence. We also offer an 8-week Inclusion Assessment, helping companies identify and address their weaknesses when it comes to diversity and inclusion.
