The Nonlinear Advantage: Denise Bronner on Turning Every Pivot Into an Asset

One of the most inspiring sessions from the 2026 AdaMarie Career Navigation Summit is now available inside the AdaMarie Professional Network. Here's what Denise Bronner, Ph.D., taught us about building a nonlinear career and how to watch the full replay.

Denise Bronner, Ph.D., knew from a young age that she wanted a PhD. What she didn't know was that her career would wind from a microbiology lab to the business world, to a global pharma company, to founding her own firm, to the executive role she holds today, and that at nearly every turn, someone would tell her she was making a mistake.

In her session at this year's summit, Denise traced that nonlinear path and shared the throughline that made it work: refusing to let other people's assumptions define where she could go.

A few lessons stood out:

  • Every pivot is an asset, not a gap. Rather than explaining away her moves between science, business, and strategy, Denise learned to position each one as added range.

  • Build the public-speaking muscle early. Denise admits a love-hate relationship with public speaking, but forcing herself to do oral presentations during her PhD elevated every role that came after. The discomfort was the investment.

  • Visibility is the engine. This was the heart of her talk. Being visible, especially candidly and consistently on LinkedIn, led to board seats, awards, keynote invitations, and opportunities that came looking for her. She even landed her current VP role by messaging a former conference co-speaker when the job appeared on LinkedIn. As she put it: opportunities are attracted to visibility, and when you're intentional about it, they start coming to you.

Denise's story is a powerful reminder that a career doesn't have to be linear to be extraordinary. Every detour, every pivot, every assumption you push past can become the thing that sets you apart.
